This guide to Chinese idioms about friendship with stories distinguishes between trust, understanding, rapport, and life-and-death loyalty. Four useful expressions are 管鲍之交, 高山流水, 莫逆之交, and 刎颈之交. Each comes from a different classical story, so they are not interchangeable labels for any good friend.
Basic facts and quick reference

1. 管鲍之交: a friend who understands your circumstances
- Characters
- 管鲍之交
- Pinyin
- guǎn bào zhī jiāo
- Literal frame
- the friendship of Guan and Bao
- Modern sense
- a deeply trusting friendship between people who understand each other
The story
The names are Guan Zhong (管仲) and Bao Shuya (鲍叔牙), two men associated with the state of Qi. In the Shiji biography of Guan Zhong and Yanzi, Bao repeatedly interprets Guan’s conduct in light of his real circumstances. He does not reduce poverty to greed, an unsuccessful plan to stupidity, or retreat in battle to simple cowardice. Later, Bao recommends Guan for high office even though doing so places Guan above him.
The important point is not that a true friend excuses everything. Bao sees both Guan’s limitations and his ability, then judges him with context rather than a convenient label. The later idiom 管鲍之交 turns their names into a model of friendship grounded in insight and trust.
How to use it
Use 管鲍之交 when the relationship has been tested and one friend has shown unusual understanding of the other’s character. It sounds literary, so it fits an essay, speech, biography, or formal tribute better than a casual text message.
Example: 他们相识多年,彼此信任,称得上管鲍之交。
They have known and trusted each other for years; theirs can truly be called a friendship like Guan and Bao’s.
2. 高山流水: the friend who hears what you mean
In the Tang Wen chapter of the Liezi, Boya plays the qin while holding images of high mountains and flowing water in mind. Zhong Ziqi recognizes those intentions through the music. The story made Ziqi a model of the 知音 (zhīyīn): a person who truly understands another’s art, mind, or aspiration.

- Characters
- 高山流水
- Pinyin
- gāo shān liú shuǐ
- Literal meaning
- high mountains and flowing water
- Modern sense
- refined music, or a rare person who understands the creator behind it
高山流水 therefore has two connected uses. It can praise music of great refinement, or it can evoke the rare bond between a creator and someone who understands the work from within. It is more specific than “close friend”: the focus is recognition.
Example: 她终于遇到能理解自己作品的人,真有高山流水遇知音之感。
She finally met someone who understood her work; it felt like high mountains and flowing water finding a true listener.
3. 莫逆之交: close friends whose hearts meet easily
The phrase is linked to a scene in the Great and Most Honoured Master chapter of the Zhuangzi. Three men ask who can associate without self-conscious calculation and act together without making a display of cooperation. They look at one another, laugh, and become friends because there is no resistance between their hearts.
- Characters
- 莫逆之交
- Pinyin
- mò nì zhī jiāo
- Literal idea
- a friendship with nothing contrary between the hearts
- Modern sense
- very close friends with deep mutual rapport
In modern use, 莫逆之交 does not require two people to agree about every subject. It praises the ease and depth of the relationship: they understand one another and are not divided by ordinary friction. The expression is elevated but less extreme than 刎颈之交.
Example: 两人兴趣不同,却相知甚深,后来成了莫逆之交。
Their interests differed, but they understood each other deeply and became the closest of friends.
4. 刎颈之交: loyalty after conflict and reconciliation
This is the strongest expression in the group. In the Shiji biography of Lian Po and Lin Xiangru, the general Lian Po resents Lin Xiangru’s higher rank. Lin avoids a personal confrontation because he believes internal rivalry would weaken their state. When Lian learns the reason, he goes to apologize while carrying thorn branches. The account ends by saying that the two became 刎颈之交.

- Characters
- 刎颈之交
- Pinyin
- wěn jǐng zhī jiāo
- Literal image
- a friendship ready to risk the neck
- Modern sense
- friends whose loyalty is strong enough to face life-and-death danger
The story matters because this friendship begins after rivalry. Lin’s restraint and Lian’s willingness to admit fault make reconciliation possible. In present-day writing, the idiom signals solemn loyalty. Calling a new acquaintance 刎颈之交 would usually sound exaggerated.
Example: 小说把两位将领写成同生共死的刎颈之交。
The novel portrays the two generals as sworn friends prepared to live or die together.
How to choose the right friendship idiom
- Choose 管鲍之交 when trust comes from being accurately understood.
- Choose 高山流水 when someone understands a work of art, an aspiration, or an unspoken intention.
- Choose 莫逆之交 for close friends whose rapport feels natural and deep.
- Choose 刎颈之交 only when you mean extraordinary loyalty, especially in literary or historical writing.

Questions learners ask
Which Chinese idiom is best for a very close friend?
莫逆之交 is a good formal expression for very close friends with deep rapport. 管鲍之交 is better when you want to emphasize trust and understanding. 刎颈之交 is much stronger and implies life-and-death loyalty.
Can 管鲍之交 describe romantic love?
It normally describes profound friendship, especially mutual trust and recognition. Using it for a romantic relationship would shift attention away from romance and toward the pair’s friendship-like understanding.
Does 高山流水 mean friendship or music?
It can mean either refined music or the rare meeting of a creator and a true appreciator. Context tells the reader which sense is active.
Are these idioms common in everyday conversation?
They are recognizable, but all four have a literary tone. In everyday speech, people more often say 好朋友, 老朋友, or 知己. Use the chengyu when its specific historical meaning adds something useful.
